I envision in 2026 an increase in homeowners requesting the kitchen to be maintained without requiring constant tidying. This is why I consider function to be one of the design features, rather than a different issue. Small decisions made early bring about long term comfort.
I would focus on ventilation plan since cooking smells diffuse directly into the living room in an open concept kitchen. I also involve high resilience surfaces such as stain resistant counter tops and floor that can withstand spillage in the kitchen and foot traffic in the dining living room. I would suggest having numerous outlets, even on the island, to avoid the running of cords across walkways. I prefer deep drawers to hold pots and pantry pull outs to hold the food as this keeps the storage tidy and minimizes the visual disturbance. In case of a small open concept kitchen renovation, I will also include at least one tall pantry or full height cabinet to add capacity, but not raise the footprint.
On my side of work I evaluate a kitchen based on its behaviour on a busy weekday, not on how they appear after being styled. I also position landing zones close to the fridge and oven so that groceries and hot foods can have a safe point to go. A lot of professionals point out that they should plan the storage of the categories rather than of items and I think that type of advice is practical since it can be modified depending on your needs. I prefer to have that also tray and recycle place as well; which is not obtrusive, yet visible as open kitchens expose it more. These decisions are not showbiz, yet they save the renovation a daily hassle.
The only thing I would add to this part is a general maintenance plan of the finishes such as the way to clean the backsplash, and the way to keep the wood accents safe. A note on lighting control such as dimmers I would also add so that the kitchen can be accomplished to change to task mode to the relaxed evening mode. Should they add any new shelves through the renovation process, I would provide suggestions on how to dress them with fewer but larger items to minimize dusting and mess. Also, I would recommend to think of future updates, such as having an empty space to install a bigger fridge or a beverage area in the future. The additions make the remodeling clever over the long term, not just in 2026.
